The roulette wheel is basically a rotating vessel with slanted walls that allows a marble to roll down into separate pockets on its rim. The pockets contain a complex arrangement of characteristics and numbers and are designed to defeat all strategy by being as random as possible. The pockets are colored alternately red and black. Depending on whether or not you are, playing with an American or European wheel there may be two or one green colored pockets that are designated with the number 0. The roulette wheel did not become popular in North America until the 19th century when it became a staple in gambling houses during the California Gold Rush.

There are a couple slight differences in the way the game of roulette is played in America as opposed to Europe. In American casinos, the croupiers scoop the chips from the table with their hands. In European casinos, the croupiers gather the chips using a long rake. In addition, American players are given different color chips to use so that one player can be told from another whereas European roulette gives players the same color of chips. A real life European game of roulette will also have more personnel standing around (usually two individuals called the boxmen) standing on either side of the dealer to keep their eye on who placed what chip where so that no scuffles break out.
