Aftermarket steering wheels – by Jim Haskard

The steering wheel is the part of the steering system that is manipulated by the driver. The rest of the steering system responds to the movements of the steering wheel. In most cars this is done through direct mechanical contact in rack and pinion steering which may be aided by hydraulics in power steering.

So what’s all this got to do with aftermarket steering wheels?

An aftermarket or racing steering wheel is designed with ergonomics in mind, if you are driving for hours at a time or racing, you want to have a good level of grip on the steering wheel. With a racing wheel the maximum lock can be adjusted for going around sharp corners.

Another feature of a racing wheel is that the steering will probably be much sharper and so the handling will be improved. The interior aesthetics of the car will also be improved.

Some after market steering wheels come with a quick release kit so that the steering wheel can be removed instantly like in a f1 car.

    What to buy?

There are many aftermarket steering wheels out there. One of the cheapest is the max power steering wheel which comes with 3 aluminium centre spokes and is finished in black leather. This wheel is priced at around £79 but you will also need to buy a mounting kit such as the one from boss which is around £40.

Another popular aftermarket steering wheel is the Richbrook R1 which has a traditional 3 spoke design, and is finished in fine Italian leather. This steering wheel will also require a mounting kit such as boss. It is priced at around £90.

Now for the most popular and expensive aftermarket steering wheel, the Momo steering wheel. There are loads of different versions available and prices start at around £120. A personal favourite of mine is the Momo v6 steering wheel which has chrome spokes and black leather which is a must buy if you’re a chrome addict like me, and is priced at £180.

Whether its to increase your comfort whilst driving, improve the handling or aesthetics a racing steering wheel should be at the top of the christmas list for any serious car tuner.
