The city hall of Prague has published a booklet with information about City Taxi Service intended for tourists. One can find in it the answers to the questions, where and how to order a car without problem, on what one can rely and to what one should pay close attention while communicating with taxi drivers.

Special peach plates marked with a sign “FAIR PLACE” have appeared at 49 taxi stands at the same time (“fair place” that is consonant with Fair Play which is sport term).

The booklet is published with 100 printed copies in seven languages: in English, German, Italian, Spanish, French, Russian and of course Czech. It is going to be sold in Prague’s airport Ruzini, in Florenz bus station and in hotels.

They mean that at this taxi stand it is guaranteed that one can be serviced in high quality manner at state governed prices. All the company supporting Prague taxi cost city hall 900 thousand crowns (approximately 32 thousand Eur).

Taxi drivers and the city council have been disputing for several years already and for some time past, city council wins again and again imposing fines on taxi drivers for cheating tourists and overcharging their services.

The representatives of Prague’s taxi drivers are of opinion that the actions of the city council are illegal. They do not like that the price ceiling for taxi services is currently 29 crowns per km – what is clearly defined by city hall. In their opinion it is reduced what does not correspond to the real economic conditions, they insisted on 99 crowns per km in negotiations with city hall.

As they say: “take a look at the capital of neighbor Slovakia”, where city hall does not interfere in the process of price formation for the taxi services. Mayor Pavel Bem himself and the other mayor’s officers have caught taxi drivers in a deception of clients.

Taxi drivers declare that the wrong policy of city authorities compels them to increase prices. One of the Prague’s taxi drivers even tried to fight for his rights by going on hunger strike near city hall building in February this year.

There are measures for curbing greedy Prague’s cabmen for the last time, such as, for instance, special plates at each station where tourists are able to familiarize themselves with transportation tariffs. One can learn of cost of transportation by sending sms message with indication of departure and terminal point. The measures include bespoken by French fashion designer uniform for taxi drivers accredited by authorities of firms.

Guide-books keep reminding that Prague’s taxi drivers are always ready to short-change any client by one hundred or more crowns though. Victims are more frequently foreign tourists who have no idea about the real distance and the prices. Guide-books recommend with every reason calling a police those tourists who deal with a taxi driver requiring unbelievable sum of money for transportation.
