Simple and Effective Ways to Save Money in Buenos Aires

A trip to Buenos Aires can be an amazing experience, and most people leave already planning a return trip. However, with the recent economic problems and sky high inflation, it has become a somewhat expensive place to live and to visit. Prices are going up at nearly 30% per year, and some prices have doubled or tripled in the past year. In order for you to make the best out of their trip to Buenos Aires, many people need to know how to live on a budget, especially if your living and being paid in Argentine wages. The easiest way to save money in Buenos Aires is not to eat out too often. Food prices in general have soared recently, much more than the 30% inflation reflects, and this has been even more obvious in restaurants. Eating out nowadays can easily cost over 50 pesos, and paying 100 pesos for a full meal with appetizers, main course, dessert and wine is not out of the question. To cut down on these costs, it is important to eat out less, and start cooking at home more. To maximize your saving on foods, try to stay away from the supermarket chains such as Disco and Carrefour, which have the highest prices around. Shop around at the different fruit and vegetable stands, as the prices vary greatly. If you don’t want to cook yourself, try getting food at one of the many cheap take out food stores. Costs are much lower, and if you find the right one, the quality of food is excellent! If you are visiting Buenos Aires for a short period of time, try staying in a temporary furnished apartment, instead of a hotel. If you stay for a week, you will find that for half the price that you would have paid for a hotel, you will be staying in a very nice, spacious apartment with a kitchen and a living room. These temporary apartment rentals are in all parts of the city, and make for a great alternative to a typical hotel. Hostels are also a great option, as they are a great way to meet people, and certain hostels in Buenos Aires organize all kinds of outings. One of the best and easiest ways to save money is to use the subway and the buses. Buses are especially useful, as they run 24 hours and go anywhere you can imagine in the city. They only cost $1 peso, and are a quick way to get around, as long as rush hour is avoided. Be sure to buy a Guia T from any kiosk to help you get around on the bus. Taxis are especially expensive, so should be avoided unless you can split the cost 3 or 4 ways. When going to clubs, try to get yourself on the guest list. Using the internet, it is free and easy to put yourself on the guest list at many different clubs in Buenos Aires, which saves you from having to wait in line, and the entrance fee is either discounted, or you enter for free. If you can’t get on the list, try going early. Many clubs offer discounts for people who arrive early. Furthermore, if you are a big drinker, try drinking before going out, or don’t drink much at all. Drinks are incredibly expensive in most bars and clubs, so even drinking two or three can put a huge dent in your wallet. Remember that every little bit that you save will give you the opportunity to do more things during your stay, therefore taking advantage of everything that Buenos Aires has to offer.
