Stansted Taxi Review

Effective land and rail connections to London Stansted is vital to ensure smooth passage through this iconic transport interchange. Despite its name London Stansted Airport is, like it sister airports Heathrow and Gatwick, not based on London, in fact it is some 30 miles north. I have travelled to and from Stansted Airport for the best part of 18 years, since the early days of the new terminal. IN that time transport links have improved ten fold, with the introduction of a fast direct London-Stansted rail link and regular coach services. Most notably however has been the development of raod infrastructure in and arund the airport over the past decade. So what is the best way to travel to and from Stansted by taxi/chauffeur. As many of you will already know, the market for taxi/chauffeur work is immense. This however does have a downside – with som many operators, large and small, how do you choose the right one for you? When we mention Stansted taxis I suppose the first thing for readers to note is that Stansted does not have a bonafide taxi “rank”. Despite there being signs indicating taxis in the main terminal the row of “taxis’ to the front of the airport are in fact private hire vehicles. Now readers may think, so what? If like me you have ever travelled from Heathrow Airport by london cab you will have hired the cab from the number of licensed taxi ranks at the arrivals area of each terminal – the difference being that the fare is determined by the meter in the cab, not a price from a reception desk. Now as a seasoned traveller I prefer this for a number of reasons – 1. One you can have confidence in the rate being charged as this has been set by the licensing authoirity – in this case – Transport for London 2. The price is what the meter says – no argument. 3. Rate cards on show for you to examine and understand when inside the cab At Stansted, the “taxi rank” is managed by BAA’s preferred taxi operator Checker Cars. Without any bonafide taxis we have established that this is a private hire operation. Based in the airport terminal they do operate pretty much a monopoly which is non-too pleasing to a seasoned traveller like me. They are however, quick, on time, convenient and clean cars – though you do pay a premium. Given that the market for private hire/taxi/chauffeurs is large I would also suggest investigating other locally based operations to Stansted. One local operation operates executive Audi vehicles and are known as Stansted Airport taxi & Chauffeur Services. They are located within 2 minutes drive of the main terminal building, can monitor all flight times from their office base to ensure that they are on hand to take you to wherever you want to go without you paying excessive parking fees, and their cars are always immaculately presented. Their prices are extremely keen too, on some routes almost 30% cheaper than Checkers Cars!! Stansted Airport Taxi & Chauffeur Services can be contacted on +44 [0] 1279 816901 24 hours a day. Given their close proximity to the airport, prompt, reliable service they are currently my stansted taxi choice. If you would prefer not to use an executive car service, then another local service, Herts and Essex taxi Service based in nearby Bishop’s Stortford offer excellent budget value services. Their cars are clean but basic; however their prices are extremely competitive! For those of you that require an environmentally friendly vehicle to collect you from London Stansted, I would recommend Green Tomato Cars. Based in London, their London taxi service is a convenient and clever way to reduce your carbon footprint!
