Fairytale city of Baroque and Classical architecture. . . . buildings like elaborate wedding cakes, dripping with gold frosting, winners of any sandcastle prize. Dresden was fire-bombed to rubble in February 1945. Today it’s a beautiful woman who’s been abused, standing tall again, her wounds still slightly visible. She’s been put back together painstakingly, lovingly, with donations from all over the world. For us, the highlight of Dresden is “Frauenkirche,” the Church of Our Lady. Hauntingly, the goldsmith who made the new cross for its dome is the son of a Royal Air Force pilot who helped bomb it. Builders have carefully put many of her original limestone blocks, darkened by time, back in their exact place in the walls amidst the new, lighter blocks.” “Her pockmarked face, which will color uniformly in 200 years, is the saddest, most heartbreakingly beautiful structure in rebuilt Dresden. “How could we have done this?” an agonized American tourist asks.
