How do I travel around the world cheaply?
-
I want to travel around the world for a few months during my gap year, but all the gap year and travel companies cost a fortune! I’ve been told doing it solo is a lot cheaper. So how do I get the price right down and still be safe?

Hi Mickinator14,
If you want to travel around the world, as in move from place to place, that’s going to be expensive. There’s probably a way of doing it but you would be lucky if you found it, unless you want to go on a road/bike trip and travel around the continent.
There’s a gap year forums here, some students organize trips together or say what they did on theirs.

If you don’t want to move about so much you can get a job while your there (check out the skiing sticky)

You must be already tired of canvassing for a good travel company. However it is good to check out travel packages which can save money not for one trip but for your future trips too. The best packages will give you loyalty or mileage points, You can check them out by surfing the net.
I usually travel through an online travel network. They are reliable and their packages are very cost effective. The best part is that it is a system where I am able to “LET” – Learn, Earn and Travel.
While surfing the net you may want to check this out too. Have many wonderful trips. I hope this has been a useful sharing and I will be happy to hear from you.

The key to low cost travel around the world is to stay in places where your money will go a long ways, like “third-world” countries. Not only will rooms, food, land travel, etc. be cheap, getting airline tickets are cheap as well. This is how I traveled from Pakistan back to the U.S., buying one-way tickets. My favorite low-cost countries and areas – Nepal, India, Southeast Asia. Also, look for volunteer opportunities – they will at least house and feed you. If you can find work, awesome, but don’t count on it.
By all means just plan it yourself, don’t pay some jerk to do all your research for you. Get some Lonely Planet books, save as much money as you can, and hit the road, it will all work out. Another good value is to buy round-the-world tickets (just do a search for this), usually the more stops on the itinerary, the better the value.
