Entry from: Mumbai, India Entry Title: “Mumbai – terrible taxis and scaring the monkeys.” Entry: “We flew into Mumbai about 9.30pm: the temperature was 28°. I picked up my luggage and walked out of the airport, to be immediately offered a taxi: I accepted. The well-dressed, well-mannered guy who’d approached me then passed me on to another, rougher-looking character who motioned me to a waiting taxi. The classic Mumbai taxi is a black-and-yellow Fiat 1100D, a design that was pretty poor when it first came out and which has not improved with age. You may have heard bad things about Fiats: they all come in spades in this truly appalling vehicle. Ugly, noisy, uncomfortable and probably an utter bitch to drive, I looked at this unlovely monstrosity standing at the kerb and yearned for the friendly, familiar lines of a Hindustan Ambassador. I got in and asked “How much to Fort district?” He said “I’ll tell you in a minute” and I started to get suspicious. To cut it short, he wanted to charge me 1300 rupees(over £17) – he claimed it was the ‘official’ rate and showed me a laminated sheet to prove it. We argued for a time and he told me that this was an air-conditioned car: I pointed out that as all the windows were open, that really didn’t count for much.
