If Amish require taxis to get to town, yet their beliefs do not allow them to drive, are they insane?

I think these people are clinically insane. They only marry within their own weird gene pool, they don’t believe in electricity unless it come from a generator, they can only have a phone in their barn, etc, etc. Yet we allow them the religious freedom to keep their children out of school. Are we promoting insanity in the name of freedom’s sake? Where does it stop? They aren’t aware of what molestation, rape and incest are because it’s a natural part of their culture. I just don’t get it.

What a bigot you are.
The Amish are no more inclined to molestation, rape or incest than any other group. Sure they keep to themselves for the most part, but so what? A lot of people have their own exclusive groups and cliques, does that make them crazy too?
Mind you, I could never become Amish,but I admire the Amish for their ability to keep simplicity and self-sufficiency in their lives which is getting more and more difficult in this high tech age. We could all learn a lot from the Amish culture, if you ask me.

I don’t understand it either. Also, why are there laws for farms about sewage run off while a horse and buggy going down the road can have sewer drains clogged and full of horse sh*t? Why are they exempt from taxes? Driving licenses? No joke the amish family near my home lets their little boy who is about 10 drive the horse and buggy. That is horrible. They actually bought a car and then they pay non amish people to drive them around. If they want to live like this then fine, but do it some place else. They make driving awful on Sundays and cause many accidents by people trying to pass them. Not to mention the damage they do to the roads. I think if they want to live in our towns then they should abide by our laws. The rest of us do.
Mac-No thats not what Im saying. What I mean is, if I had to take a state test and pay a fee to be able to drive on state roads then they should too. If I have to clean up my dogs business why can they let their horses sh*t all over the road and not have to clean it? If I have to pay taxes why shouldn’t they? Im just saying whats good for the goose is good for the gander.

Why don’t we just mind our business.
These people have lived this way forever, and they are probably a lot healthier than we are. There has only been one Amish murder as far as I know about.
Id’ say they are doing okay, if they can do without cars, what’s it to you?
I have never heard that rape and incest was a part of their culture, but I know that the women are expected to be pure when married.

That is what religion does. Obviously they are more extreme than most other religions. However, some of them are more happy than others. As someone who grew up as a Jehovah’s Witness, I can tell you that most of them are miserable. But I hear that many Mormons are quite happy, although that might not be true.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Just about everything you stated is false. First of all, the Amish are not a single group, there are several different “types” of Amish. What modern conveniences they will use or not use depends on what type they fall into. But rape, incest and molestation are not part of any of their normal lives. The degree to which those crimes happen in Amish society is no greater than the degree it happens in mainstream America.
I am not even going to begin to explain the details of Amish culture to someone as narrow minded as yourself. But why are you attacking a group of people who try to live a peaceful existence and are committed to their beliefs? Sounds like your the one who is mentally unstable.
