Is it silly to be afraid of going into taxis alone?
-
I just hear things about women getting raped and such, it’s really worrying
If I go in a taxi I have to be with someone (a friend, boyfriend/husband or family member).
It’s just taxis really. I’m fine on a bus because there are other people around but in taxis it’s just you, it’s not really as public. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to the Bishopsteignton Taxis RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

A very real concern…safety in numbers…

no it is not silly — but it is sad that you cannot feel comfy going anywhere by any mode of transport on your own— good luck

I guess it depends on where u live and maybe if u r really scared u could try to get the plates # each time u go into a taxi so u know who is who if the time ever comes where u really need to know, and to lessen the chance of anything bad happening u could let them know u have their plates # and then they know they would be accountable.

What sort of taxi’s does your area have?
Round where I am, we have black cabs with a separate compartment for the passengers, which does make it feel somewhat safer. We can also specifically order a female driver, and there is a priority pickup service for lone women, or lone children, so they don’t have to hang around on their own at night.
Does your area have anything like this? If so, use it.
If not… well then your fear is slightly reasonable. If you just have the normal car sort of taxi, sitting in the back instead of the front will reduce the chance of casual groping, but will not really help with violent attacks. Getting the bus has more opportunity for casual groping, but also more ways to deal with problems.

And don’t get in a car because they have accidents, or planes they crach, ships sink, trains derail, busses are full of perverts, you could fall on the tracks on the subway.

No, far from silly, it is very sensible. When you get a taxi you are getting into a car with a stranger, and become very anonymous to people on the street and in other cars.
If at all possible, try to always phone a head and book a taxi so the driver is aware there is a record of you being in his/her taxi. If not, try to let friends know you are taking a taxi, from where to were and the expected time you will arrive.
Anything you can do to ensure others know where you are and when will not only make you feel safer, but also will BE safer.

It’s not silly. Once, years ago, my Fiat wouldn’t start on the morning of an important college final exam. I called a cab (I live in a city of ~25 000) and he showed up in an old junker that had an odor. While driving me to campus, so help me God, the driver-while driving with one hand-wolfed down a then new to the public Double Cheese Burger. I thought I was going to spew. Several days later I came down with an awful head cold that I KNOW can be traced back to that cab and the freak driving it. AND it cost me $10 for a 5″ drive.
Don’t get too relaxed on buses, either. I’ve seen too much footage of melees breaking out on them, hard as that is to believe.

well it is silly in the sense that the odds of it happening to you are probably vanishingly small, but it’s not silly in the sense that it clearly does happen sometimes, so it’s not a totally irrational fear.

It is not silly. It is common sense.
